Lexicógrafo y escritor estadounidense. Asistió a la Universidad de Yale y posteriormente estudió leyes. Mientras trabajaba como profesor en Nueva York comenzó sus esfuerzos de toda una vida para promover una educación específicamente estadounidense. Su primer paso fue publicar A Grammatical Institute of the English Language [Manual de gramática del idioma inglés], que incluía The American Spelling Book [El libro de ortografía estadounidense] (1783), que llegaría a ser conocido como la "Ortografía de tapas azules y vendería alrededor de 100 millones de copias. Un ardiente federalista, Webster fundó dos periódicos pro federalistas (1793) y escribió artículos sobre política y muchos otros temas. En 1806 produjo su primer diccionario; en 1807 comenzó a trabajar en su pionero American Dictionary of the English Language [Diccionario estadounidense del idioma inglés] (1828; 2a ed. 1840). Inspirado en su convicción de que la ortografía, gramática y el uso del lenguaje debían inspirarse en el idioma vivo y hablado, el diccionario jugó un papel fundamental en la campaña de darle dignidad y vitalidad al idioma inglés hablado en EE.UU. En 1821, Webster cofundó Amherst College. Los derechos del diccionario fueron adquiridos en la venta de su patrimonio por George y Charles Merriam, cuya compañía desarrolló la serie de diccionarios Merriam-Webster.
